Ghana's junior badminton team, the Golden Shuttlers, has progressed to the next stage of the mixed team relay at the 2026 All-Africa U-19 Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt. The current squad in Cairo consists of Obabompa Adu Mintah, Francis Obeng Shang, Samuel Amasah, Moslena Ama Korama Adu, Racheal Quarcoo, Margaret Sarpei, and Alana Faith Sullo. Ghana will next face Mauritius in the second round, which will be their first real test of the tournament. The Cairo tournament brings together 14 nations and runs through to October 3, 2026.
Beyond the mixed team relay, members of Team Ghana are competing in various events, including men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Their goal is to accumulate points toward the African rankings. Ghana Badminton President Evans Yeboah stated that the team's presence in Cairo is part of a broader development pathway aimed at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The championship will help prepare Obabompa Adu Mintah for the Dakar Youth Olympics, where she is set to represent Ghana. Yeboah also highlighted the team's participation in a Badminton World Federation Youth Athlete Development camp from September 30 to October 2. This camp includes a Shuttle Time Youth Leadership Workshop, an IOC Athlete 365 Career+ Self-Discovery Workshop, and an integrity workshop.
The development camp provides an important chance for the young athletes to grow as leaders and ambassadors for the sport, not just as competitors. After the current U-19 championships, Team Ghana will join 57 other countries for the BWF World Junior Championships in Cairo, running from October 5 to 17. This will mark Ghana's seventh appearance at that global event.
According to Evans Yeboah, the BWF World Junior Championships is a consistent marker of the country's junior badminton development. For Ghanaian sports followers, the Golden Shuttlers' progress offers a rare bright spot in a discipline that receives less attention than football but continues to produce continental medal contenders.
