The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has introduced a new directive requiring air travelers departing from Accra International Airport (AIA) to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled flight departure time. This move is aimed at ensuring a smooth and secure travel experience for passengers. The new administrative directive follows the official roll-out of mandatory luggage pre-screening checks at the main entrance of the Departure Hall.
The new measures are being implemented in partnership with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC). Security personnel are deploying high-tech scanning machines and specialized sniffer dogs at the entrance of the terminal before any traveler can proceed to their airline check-in counters. These enhanced security protocols are intended to strengthen global aviation safety and curb illegal trafficking.
The introduction of these security measures comes at a time when passenger traffic through the AIA is steadily climbing. GACL noted that arriving early is crucial to make up for the time it might take to check passengers in. The new measure is critical to preventing passengers from missing their flights.
According to the GACL, the additional time will allow passengers to comfortably undergo the new NACOC security screening, complete standard airline check-in, and clear immigration formalities without unnecessary pressure. The GACL statement detailed that this will enable passengers to proceed to their flights without any last-minute rush.
In a further bid to streamline operations and manage heavy terminal crowds, the GACL has reminded the public that access to the Departure Hall is strictly restricted. Exclusively, only traveling passengers are allowed in the Departure Hall. Non-traveling individuals, well-wishers, friends, and family are barred from entering the main hall area.
Travelers are strongly urged to adjust their schedules immediately to accommodate the new three-hour buffer when heading to the airport, especially considering the traffic situation toward the airport. This will enable them to factor in the extra time required for the new security screening process.
The GACL's new directive aims to ensure a secure and efficient travel experience for passengers departing from Accra International Airport. By introducing these enhanced security protocols and adjusting arrival times, the airport authorities hope to minimize disruptions and prevent passengers from missing their flights.
