The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has celebrated its first anniversary by donating medical equipment to nine hospitals across the country. The equipment, which includes ultrasound machines, oxygen plants, and X-ray machines, was delivered to hospitals in multiple regions, including Volta, Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western North, Savannah, and Upper West. This donation is part of GMTF's efforts to close equipment gaps in regional and district-level healthcare in Ghana.

The beneficiary hospitals include Volta Regional Hospital, Sefwi-Wiawso Government Hospital, Bole Municipal Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Worawora Government Hospital, Wa Municipal Hospital, Kumasi South Hospital, Eastern Regional Hospital, and Northern Regional Hospital. These hospitals serve communities across the country, and the equipment is expected to improve patient care and diagnostic capabilities. The donation is also expected to reduce the pressure on healthcare workers and strengthen service delivery.

The equipment donated includes ultrasound machines, oxygen concentrators, an oxygen plant, X-ray machines, and printers. According to GMTF, the goal of the intervention is to help the beneficiary hospitals diagnose conditions more quickly, respond better to emergencies, and ultimately improve patient care. The new equipment will also bring imaging services closer to patients, reducing the need for referrals to larger facilities.

At Volta Regional Hospital, the new ultrasound machines are expected to strengthen diagnostic capacity and speed up clinical decision-making. Similarly, at Worawora Government Hospital, the new equipment will give health professionals more tools to assess and manage patients. Management at Bole Municipal Hospital welcomed the donation, saying better access to essential equipment would ease pressure on healthcare workers and strengthen service delivery.

Medical Director of Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Dr. Leslie Issah Adam Zakariah, commended GMTF for the support and pledged that the hospital would continue working with the Fund. He assured that the equipment would be put to effective use for patients and staff. The donation is also expected to reduce the time and cost involved in seeking specialist imaging elsewhere.

The latest donations build on previous equipment and infrastructure support GMTF has provided to hospitals across Ghana since its establishment a year ago. GMTF Administrator, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, said the Fund would continue engaging with health facilities to identify their most pressing needs and design interventions capable of making a measurable difference.

GMTF's efforts are aimed at addressing the historical gaps in basic diagnostic equipment in regional and district hospitals in Ghana. The Fund's interventions are expected to continue targeting areas where support could meaningfully strengthen healthcare delivery. No further details have been given on how soon additional hospitals might benefit or what form future support will take.
