On September 26, 2026, the University of Ghana played host to the country's maiden EARTH Summit, an event aimed at equipping young people with practical environmental skills. Organized by the Planeteer Alliance, the youth arm of the Captain Planet Foundation, the summit brought together participants for interactive sessions and hands-on activities. The event's host, Nana Akua Dokyiwaa Karikari, welcomed participants and emphasized the crucial role young people play in environmental conservation.

Toluwalase Abiona, West African Regional Coordinator of the Planeteer Alliance, introduced participants to the organization's work and the opportunities available to young people who join the network. The Planeteer Alliance seeks to empower young people to take action on environmental issues, and the summit provided a platform for participants to learn about the organization's initiatives. Abiona's presentation aimed to inspire participants to become Planeteers and contribute to environmental conservation efforts.

A practical session on tree planting, led by Mr. Asare Kuffour, Head of Science at Mary Mother of Good Counsel School, was a key feature of the summit. Kuffour highlighted the importance of trees and provided guidance on practical considerations for growing them. Participants subsequently took part in a tree-planting exercise, applying their new knowledge in a hands-on setting. This exercise not only educated participants but also contributed to environmental conservation.

The summit also addressed responsible waste management through a hands-on session led by Heneba Kwadwo Safo, leader of the BuzStopBoys. Participants learned about the concept of source separation and how to separate waste appropriately to support better waste management practices. The interactive session incorporated games and practical activities, making it easier for participants to understand the importance of separating waste at source.

The various sessions at the summit were designed to demonstrate that environmental protection requires more than just understanding the challenges confronting the planet. They aimed to empower participants to take practical steps towards addressing those challenges and contributing to positive change. By providing a platform for young people to engage with environmental issues, the summit sought to inspire a new generation of environmental leaders.

The event concluded with the distribution of Veitchia palm seedlings to participants, extending the environmental action beyond the summit venue. This initiative encouraged participants to continue their environmental efforts in their homes, schools, and communities. By equipping young people with practical knowledge and experiences, the summit aimed to create a lasting impact on environmental conservation in Ghana.

The maiden Ghana EARTH Summit provided a valuable opportunity for young people to deepen their understanding of environmental issues and develop practical skills to contribute to environmental conservation. The event demonstrated the potential for collaborative efforts between organizations and individuals to promote environmental protection and inspire positive change. The summit's impact is expected to be felt in the years to come as participants apply their new knowledge and skills in their communities.
