The Government of Ghana is seeking alternative financing options to complete the Takoradi Market Circle Redevelopment Project, which has stalled due to funding issues. The project, initially funded through an export credit from Deutsche Bank S.p.A Italy with support from SACE, an Italian agency, has seen significant progress but remains incomplete. Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, disclosed this during a visit to the project site in Takoradi.
According to Minister Ayariga, the government has been tasked with developing an alternative financing framework to ensure the project's completion. He emphasized that it is essential to complete the project, which is far advanced, to benefit market women and traders. The minister noted that the project's incompletion would be unfair to the people it is intended to serve. The government is committed to resolving the financing issues to bring the project to fruition.
As part of the new financing mechanism, the government plans to pre-rent out spaces in the market and use the rental income to complete the project. Minister Ayariga explained that renting out the spaces could generate sufficient funds to finish the project, as the amount needed is relatively small. The government is in discussions with the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, the Ministry, and contractors to finalize the plan.
The government will partner with banks to collect money from those interested in renting spaces in the market, ensuring a fair allocation process. Minister Ayariga stated that involving banks will prevent partisan considerations or interference in the allocation process. This approach aims to ensure transparency and fairness in the allocation of stores.
Minister Ayariga assured the people of Sekondi-Takoradi and the Western Region that the government is working diligently to bring the contractors back on site to resume work. He expressed optimism that the project can be completed within a year, pending negotiations with the contractors. The government's commitment to completing the project is unwavering.
The Takoradi Market Circle Redevelopment Project is a significant initiative aimed at improving the livelihoods of market women and traders in the region. Once completed, the project is expected to provide a modern and well-organized market space, enhancing the overall trading experience. The government's efforts to revive the project have been welcomed by the local community.
The project's revival is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. The government's alternative financing strategy is a crucial step towards ensuring the project's completion. Minister Ayariga's assurance of the government's commitment to completing the project has raised hopes among the local community.
