The Government of Ghana has initiated land preparation for the construction of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra. This development was announced by Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu on September 21, 2026. The project aims to enhance maternal, child, and reproductive healthcare services in the country.
The new facility will replace the hospital's existing maternity unit and feature specialised obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, and operating theatres. Additionally, it will have a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency Unit, and Intensive Care Unit. These facilities will significantly improve the quality of care provided to patients.
The Mother and Child Block will also include an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health clinics, breastfeeding and family planning units, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit. This comprehensive range of services will cater to the diverse needs of patients and provide a one-stop centre for maternal and child healthcare.
The project will further provide diagnostic imaging, laboratory and blood bank facilities, pharmacy services, a Central Sterile Services Department, physiotherapy and rehabilitation units. These additions will ensure that patients receive holistic care and that the facility is equipped to handle a wide range of medical needs.
The facility will also have teaching, research, and conference facilities, making it a centre for learning and professional development for healthcare professionals. This will contribute to the growth of medical expertise in Ghana and enhance the country's capacity to address healthcare challenges.
According to Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the project is part of President John Dramani Mahama's renewed investment in major health infrastructure. This initiative demonstrates the government's commitment to improving healthcare services and outcomes in Ghana.
