Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has publicly expressed her disappointment and frustration with the state of healthcare in Kiambu county. She announced the passing of Susan Mugure, a 27-year-old constituent who died while giving birth. Wamuchomba accused Governor Kimani Wamatangi of neglecting healthcare services in the county. She claimed that the county administration was more focused on spending millions on media adverts praising the governor's distribution of livestock rather than addressing shortages of drugs, equipment, and medical personnel at county hospitals. This, she argued, was a major contributor to Mugure's death.
According to Wamuchomba, Mugure was forced to seek maternity care at a private facility in Limuru due to the lack of adequate healthcare services in the public hospitals. If Githunguri Level 5 hospital was operational, Wamuchomba suggested that Mugure's life might have been saved. The MP expressed her condolences to Mugure's family and colleagues, describing the loss of a young mother as deeply painful.
Mugure was buried on Tuesday, September 23, 2026, at Githiga in Githunguri, Kiambu county. The burial was conducted according to the customs of the Kenda Muihuru faith, with her grave shaped like a cave, a hollow cut into the earth rather than an open pit. This unusual practice drew significant attention from mourners gathered at the burial.
Despite the fatal outcome for Mugure, her baby boy survived the delivery and is currently reported to be in stable condition under medical care. Wamuchomba extended her condolences to Mugure's family and her colleagues at Fresha, where Mugure worked. The MP urged the public to come to Githunguri and cry with them, highlighting the devastating impact of the tragedy on the community.
