Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has downplayed claims of divisions within the opposition, likening disagreements among its leaders to normal sibling rivalry in a polygamous family. He emphasized that the coalition remains united behind plans to field a single presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election. Gachagua's comments come amid reports of differing opinions on the timing of selecting a joint presidential flagbearer.

Gachagua, the former Deputy President, made the remarks during a church service in Isinya, Kajiado County. He described the opposition leaders as committed to working together to challenge President William Ruto, despite their occasional disagreements. According to Gachagua, the opposition leaders talk on a daily basis and are united on the principle of having one candidate. He attributed the disagreements to normal petty problems that are expected in a broad political alliance.

The DCP leader cautioned opposition leaders against allowing overzealous supporters to dictate their political relationships. He warned that unchecked political attacks could eventually weaken the coalition and undermine its common objective. Gachagua claimed that some political influencers associated with his DCP party had been recruited and allegedly paid by individuals opposed to him to attack his leadership and the party.

Gachagua also revealed that differences remain over the appropriate timing of selecting a joint presidential candidate. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka proposed that the flagbearer be identified before December, while Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna favoured February and Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua suggested May. Gachagua proposed April next year as a more suitable time, citing the need to avoid exposing the individual to political pressure and possible frustration from the government.

The DCP leader dismissed arguments that academic qualifications, experience or political credentials should determine who becomes the coalition's presidential candidate. Instead, he insisted that electoral numbers and the support of ordinary Kenyans would ultimately decide. Gachagua emphasized that the person with the numbers and support of the people would be the one to decide.

Gachagua's comments come as the opposition coalition prepares for the 2027 General Election. The coalition's ability to present a united front will be crucial in challenging President Ruto's administration. Gachagua's dismissal of opposition divisions as 'polygamous family' rivalry suggests that the coalition is working to present a united front ahead of the election.
