The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed a recent multiple road crash in Plateau state, Nigeria, to brake failure. The incident occurred along the Hawan Kibo-Jos route, resulting in the loss of 20 lives. According to FRSC, eighteen of the deceased were passengers in a Yankari Express Toyota Hummer Bus en route to Abuja, while the remaining two victims were on a motorcycle.
The crash involved a Howo truck that suffered brake failure and collided with a Toyota Hummer bus, a Toyota Corolla, and a motorcycle. The Sector Commander of FRSC in Plateau State, Mr Adelaja Ogungbemi, confirmed that the incident was caused by brake failure. FRSC Public Education Officer, Mr Osondu Ohaeri, later provided additional details, stating that the crash occurred at 3:32 p.m. near Sopp Water Falls.
A total of 25 people were involved in the crash, comprising 23 males and two females. Out of these, five individuals sustained injuries, while 20 males lost their lives. The injured victims were taken to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital for treatment. The deceased were deposited at JUTH Mortuary.
The FRSC identified four vehicles involved in the crash: a Howo Sino truck with registration number AGL 525 YN, a Toyota Corolla with registration number AB 129 M, a Toyota Hummer bus operated by Yankari Express, and a motorcycle with unavailable registration details. FRSC rescue personnel cleared the obstruction caused by the crash and restored traffic flow on the affected highway section.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. He prayed for the repose of their souls and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. Mohammed directed the crash investigation team to conduct a thorough probe into the incident, focusing on the reported brake failure and loss of control.
The Corps Marshal urged motorists, particularly commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, to prioritize roadworthiness, maintenance, speed management, and responsible driving. He emphasized that the loss of 20 lives in a single crash was not just a statistic, but represented 20 families plunged into grief. Mohammed stressed that every road user must take personal responsibility for safety.
The FRSC has deployed resources to enhance emergency response and rescue operations nationwide. The Corps Marshal's directive for a thorough investigation into the incident highlights the importance of establishing the circumstances surrounding the crash.
