In a collaborative effort between the Mahdia Regional Health Administration, the kidney disease department at Tahar Sfar Hospital, the Tunisian Kidney Patient Association, and several cardiac and vascular surgeons from Habib Bourguiba Hospital in Sfax, 12 low-income patients with kidney failure underwent free vascular access surgery. The operations, which took place on Saturday, aimed to install arteriovenous fistulas, a crucial step in the treatment of patients requiring dialysis.

According to Mahdia Regional Health Director Youssef Badaoui, the surgical team was led by the head of the cardiac and vascular surgery department at Sfax Hospital, who volunteered along with four specialist doctors to perform the operations. Additionally, a radiologist from Tunis volunteered to conduct necessary imaging preparations for the patients on Friday. The Tunisian Kidney Patient Association played a vital role in coordinating with patients, supporting them throughout the process, and facilitating their transportation.

The patients who benefited from the free operations were from low-income backgrounds and resided in the Mahdia region. By providing these surgical interventions, the healthcare teams aimed to alleviate the burden on patients who previously had to travel to other cities, such as Monastir and Sousse, for similar procedures. This not only caused them significant inconvenience but also resulted in considerable waiting times.

Director Badaoui emphasized that the patients who underwent surgery were provided with accommodation and close medical monitoring before and after the procedure. He expressed his administration's desire to organize similar free medical interventions for kidney failure patients in the Mahdia region in the future.

A total of 25 patients are scheduled to benefit from these free vascular access surgeries, with the procedures set to continue at Tahar Sfar University Hospital on Sunday. The partnership between healthcare authorities, medical specialists, and patient associations has made this initiative possible, underscoring the importance of collaboration in delivering quality healthcare services to those in need.

The Tunisian Kidney Patient Association's efforts in supporting patients with kidney failure are multifaceted, encompassing not only logistical assistance but also emotional support throughout their treatment journey. By bridging gaps in healthcare access, such initiatives contribute significantly to improving the overall well-being of patients with chronic conditions.

The success of this medical initiative highlights the impact of coordinated efforts between healthcare providers, specialists, and patient advocacy groups in addressing healthcare disparities in Tunisia. As the country continues to strive for equitable access to healthcare services, such partnerships will play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for patients with kidney failure and other chronic conditions.
