The Assin Fosu District Court has granted bail to four individuals accused of kidnapping and torturing 30-year-old Bismark Amoh, a resident of Assin Fosu in Ghana's Central Region. The accused, who are facing six charges, including kidnapping and conspiracy to commit crime, were granted bail following an application by their counsel. The court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, set the bail conditions for each of the accused.
The four accused persons, Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School, Oteng Barfour, 31, an electrician, Charles Doku, 53, a security guard, and Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, alias Culture, a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School, were arrested following allegations that they held Mr Amoh hostage between September 6 and 11, 2026. The prosecution alleges that the suspects subjected the victim to severe torture while demanding GH¢45,000 from his family.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Prosecutor ASP Wonder Lumor and Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo, the accused claimed that Mr Amoh had defrauded the first accused, Mavis Badu Acheampong, of GH¢44,800. The prosecution has also indicated that a fifth suspect, described as a senior military officer and alleged to have orchestrated the kidnapping, is currently outside Ghana and is being pursued by the police.
The court granted Mavis Badu Acheampong and Oteng Barfour bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties, while Charles Doku and Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng were each granted bail in the sum of GH¢60,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be a public officer. The court adjourned the case to October 23, 2026, for further mention.
The alleged kidnapping and torture of Mr Amoh have raised concerns about the security situation in the Central Region. The incident has also highlighted the issue of fraud and the need for individuals to be cautious when engaging in electronic transactions.
Meanwhile, Ms Acheampong has reportedly filed a separate complaint against Mr Amoh, accusing him of fraud involving an electronic transaction. This development suggests that the case may involve a complex web of allegations and counter-allegations.
The police are expected to continue investigating the case and pursuing the fifth suspect, who is believed to be outside Ghana. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of the authorities taking swift action to prevent and investigate crimes, and to bring perpetrators to justice.
