Police in Kenya have arrested four people, including a woman, after intercepting a vehicle suspected to have been involved in terrorizing members of the public at gunpoint in Mtito Andei. The operation took place on September 20 after officials alerted security authorities in Voi about a suspicious vehicle carrying four occupants who were reportedly armed.
According to police, the occupants of the vehicle had allegedly terrorized people in the Mtito Andei area, including passengers traveling in a Volkswagen Jetta belonging to the Public Service Commission. The Jetta was reportedly traveling towards Mombasa when its occupants were allegedly confronted at gunpoint. The suspicious vehicle subsequently left Mtito Andei towards Voi, prompting DCI officers from Voi to pursue it.
Officers from Maungu police station were also alerted and mounted a roadblock to support the operation. The vehicle was intercepted in the Maungu area, leading to the arrest of four occupants. A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of several firearms and rounds of ammunition, including a shotgun with eight rounds of 12-gauge ammunition and 21 rounds of buckshot ammunition.
Police also recovered a Beretta pistol loaded with 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition, as well as assorted clothing. The scene was processed and documented, while an inventory of the recovered firearms and ammunition was prepared, police said. The exhibits were secured pending collection by the Officer Commanding DCI Mtito Andei.
The four suspects were released on police bond and directed to appear before the OC DCI Mtito Andei on September 25 for further action. This incident is separate from another incident in Kisumu where a security bouncer at a nightclub is nursing gunshot injuries after being shot by an unknown assailant in the early hours of Monday.
The incident in Kisumu occurred at around 3:20 am in Kisumu Central subcounty as the victim, aged 32, was reportedly heading to an M-Pesa kiosk to deposit Sh8,000. According to police, the man who works as a security bouncer at a club was confronted by an unidentified man who pushed him, triggering a confrontation.
The assailant reportedly pulled out a pistol during the altercation and shot him once on the right side of the head before fleeing. He sustained injuries and was rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspect.
