Fort Portal City Council has initiated the construction of emptiable VIP latrines at three primary schools and a health facility as part of its 2026/2027 financial year projects. The project aims to improve sanitation in the city's educational and healthcare institutions. Kazingo Primary School, Bukuuku Primary School, and Kagote Primary School will each receive a new latrine facility.

The construction projects have been awarded to different contractors. Martial Tech Company Limited will build Kazingo Primary School's five-stance latrine with a shower at a cost of 30.1 million shillings. Mukama Talimba Investments Limited will construct Bukuuku Primary School's facility, which includes a urinal, for 30.15 million shillings. Meanwhile, Bamuhumbu Water and Construction Engineering will build Kagote Primary School's five-stance latrine with a shower for 30.47 million shillings.

In addition to the school projects, Kataraka Health Centre IV will receive a two-stance latrine with two showers, to be built by Nyaika General Enterprises Company Limited at a cost of 23 million shillings. The City Engineer, Jimmy Balewa, has set a deadline for completion within three months. This project is part of the council's efforts to enhance the city's infrastructure.

The initiative has been welcomed by local leaders. Mayor Rev. Kintu Willy Muhanga emphasized that investing in school sanitation is crucial to restoring Fort Portal's reputation as one of the country's leading academic cities. The project is expected to improve the learning environment and overall health standards in the city's schools.

The Assistant Resident City Commissioner for Fort Portal North, Saad Bukenya, has urged contractors to deliver quality work and local leaders to monitor the projects closely. This will ensure that the facilities meet the required standards and are completed on time. The project is also expected to create employment opportunities for local residents.

Another project underway is the construction of a 139.84 million shilling staff house at Bukuuku Health Centre IV, which is expected to be completed in four months. This project aims to provide better accommodation for healthcare workers, enhancing their ability to serve the community effectively.

The construction of VIP latrines and staff houses demonstrates Fort Portal City Council's commitment to improving the city's infrastructure and services. The projects are expected to have a positive impact on the community, promoting better health, sanitation, and education standards.
