Former Sekhukhune FC player Shaune Mogaila has pleaded guilty to causing the fatal crash that claimed the life of nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela in October 2024 in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni. Mogaila appeared in the Thembisa magistrate’s court on Monday, marking a significant development in the two-year court proceedings. He pleaded guilty to two of the three charges he faces: culpable homicide and failing to remain at the scene of the accident.

According to Mogaila's plea statement, he admitted to negligently causing or contributing to the collision that resulted in Gomolemo's death. On October 30, 2024, Gomolemo’s mother, Keo Mavimbela, was driving her daughter and a neighbour to school when Mogaila crashed into their vehicle. The accident killed Gomolemo and left Keo and the 13-year-old neighbour hospitalised for two months. Mogaila then fled the scene, adding to the charges against him.

Gomolemo’s father, Tshepo Kekana, expressed relief that Mogaila had pleaded guilty, bringing some closure to the family. However, he noted that there was still more to the story and that the guilty plea was not entirely satisfying. Kekana appreciated the support received from AfriForum, which has been assisting the family throughout the court proceedings.

AfriForum private prosecution unit spokesperson Barry Bateman said they were satisfied that Mogaila had pleaded guilty, sparing the family a lengthy trial. However, Bateman expressed disappointment that Mogaila did not provide a complete account of what led to the deadly crash. The focus now shifts to preparing victim impact statements to assist the court in imposing a just and appropriate sentence.

The matter has been postponed to November 17 for sentencing proceedings. Mogaila’s bail was extended as the court continues to deliberate on the case. The guilty plea and forthcoming sentencing have brought some closure to the family, but the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving.

The case drew attention to the need for accountability and justice in cases of road accidents. AfriForum's involvement in the case highlights the organization's commitment to supporting victims and their families in their pursuit of justice. The community has been following the case closely, awaiting the final outcome.

As the case moves towards sentencing, the family and the community await the court's decision. The guilty plea and subsequent sentencing are expected to send a strong message to drivers about the consequences of reckless driving. The incident has had a lasting impact on the family and the community, emphasizing the importance of road safety and responsible behavior.
