Former Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo has declared his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election on December 6. In an interview with Jeune Afrique, Embalo confirmed his bid for the top seat, this time under the banner of the Republican Platform. This move comes as the country's military transition authorities, led by General Horta N'Tam, plan to hold presidential and legislative elections after a new constitution was adopted by a majority of 70% in a referendum on August 30.
During his previous term, which ended with his ousting in 2025, Embalo implemented various development projects and improved the country's macroeconomic indicators. Under his leadership, Guinea-Bissau saw a growth rate of 5.8% in 2025, a decrease in budget deficit to 6.9% of GDP, and a decline in public debt to 76% of GDP. These improvements were largely attributed to successful cashew production campaigns and reforms supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Embalo's presidency was marked by significant infrastructure developments, including the construction of a road connecting Bissau, Bafata, and Gabu, as well as strategic bridges over the João Landim and Farim rivers. His administration also focused on renovating and rehabilitating the country's infrastructure, with journalist Allen Yéro Embalo highlighting the progress made in an interview with Africa 24 TV. The projects included a 115 km corridor connecting Banjul, Ziguinchor, and Bissau, with plans to extend it to Conakry via Boké.
The former president also emphasized his achievements in the energy sector, particularly through partnerships with the Organization for the Development of the Gambia River (OMVG) and the development of solar energy in Bolama. Additionally, Embalo took pride in modernizing the Guinea-Bissau-China Military Friendship Hospital, describing it as a significant scientific and technological advancement for the country.
On the diplomatic front, Embalo strengthened Guinea-Bissau's international position, fostering partnerships with various countries, including France, Russia, China, and the United States. His leadership helped the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) navigate challenges, and his efforts increased the country's visibility on the sub-regional and international stages.
Embalo's vision for the country's future focuses on the youth, whom he sees as key to Guinea-Bissau's emergence. He aims to reform the education system and invest in scientific and technological training to empower the younger generation. The former president also highlighted his commitment to fighting corruption and promoting good governance during his term in office.
As Embalo prepares to launch his new presidential campaign, his supporters and critics alike will be watching closely. With his track record of development projects and diplomatic achievements, Embalo may pose a strong challenge in the upcoming election. The country's military authorities have set a date for the polls, and Embalo's candidacy could potentially pave the way for his return to power.
