Former Chuka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Erastus Njoka has launched a new political party, Vision for Development Alliance (VIDA). The party aims to provide a safe environment for aspirants seeking various elective seats. Njoka, who was Dean of Agriculture at Egerton University before becoming the founding VC at Chuka University, stated that his party will offer a free and fair nomination process for aspirants in Tharaka-Nithi and other counties.
Njoka, who emerged second in the 2022 elections behind the incumbent Governor Muthomi Njuki, plans to contest for the Tharaka-Nithi Governor seat again in 2027. He formed VIDA to champion development and economic prosperity for residents of Tharaka Nithi and other counties. The party will also promote environmental conservation and industrialization through value addition of agricultural produce and development of other sectors of the economy.
Njoka expressed concerns about the current state of party nominations, citing unfair practices that deny popular candidates party tickets. He mentioned that during party primaries, popular aspirants often fall prey to political schemes and are denied tickets. To address this, VIDA will have a transparent and inclusive nomination process, with no charges for people with disabilities (PWDs) to participate.
VIDA has already opened offices in 28 counties, with its headquarters located at Kimbo, near Ruiru in Kiambu County. The party's dominant color is green, symbolizing life and environmental conservation. Njoka, who prefers to be referred to as the party patron, not leader, emphasized that VIDA is committed to empowering the people and promoting economic prosperity.
The party's vision is hinged on economic prosperity for Kenyans, environmental conservation, and industrialization. Njoka highlighted his experience in environmental conservation, having led the planting of 2.5 million trees during his tenure as Chuka University VC. He believes that VIDA has the potential to become influential and excel in promoting the country's development.
Njoka assured aspirants that they are welcome to seek VIDA's ticket in the nominations, including for the presidency. He encouraged competition, stating that anyone from every corner of Kenya can apply to be nominated as a candidate in the party. The party aims to provide a fair playing field for all aspirants.
VIDA's launch marks a new development in Kenya's political landscape, with Njoka's vision of promoting economic prosperity, environmental conservation, and industrialization. The party's success will depend on its ability to provide a transparent and inclusive nomination process, as well as its appeal to Kenyans seeking a new political outfit.
