An Ohio man, Caleb Flynn, 40, a former pastor who appeared as a contestant on "American Idol" in 2013, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37. Judge Jeannine Pratt handed down the sentence, calling Flynn's actions "abhorrent" and "impossible to fathom". Flynn was found guilty of aggravated murder and multiple counts of murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence.

According to prosecutors, Flynn "executed" his wife by shooting her twice in the back of the head in bed so that he could be with his mistress. He then manipulated the crime scene to make it seem as if an intruder had broken in through the garage. Flynn called 911 early on February 16 to report that his wife had been shot by an intruder at their home in Tipp City, north of Dayton. He was arrested three days later.

During the sentencing, Judge Pratt said that after considering the evidence, there is "one clear and obvious conclusion" - that Flynn poses the "highest risk" of harm to the public. Pratt admonished the "layers of deceit, manipulation, and cruelty" that Flynn has shown. She also addressed Flynn's actions, saying, "You could have walked away. You could have separated from her and left her here on this earth to be able to be with the people that need her, who loved her, who looked forward to having her in their lives."

Before the sentence was handed down, Flynn addressed the court, crying while reading from prepared remarks. He repeatedly denied killing his wife, saying, "I have unfortunately lied about a lot of things over the last couple of years. But as I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife." He apologized to his wife's family and asked for their forgiveness.

Members of Ashley Flynn's family, including her daughters, Alyssa and Ava, addressed the court prior to the sentence being handed down. They spoke to the impact of their mother's murder and asked for the maximum possible sentence. In a letter read on her behalf, Alyssa said, "You have already caused so much pain to your family and the world. The least you can do is tell everyone you did it and receive your outcome."

The defence had asked for a sentence that "preserves the possibility of parole and a return to society following his rehabilitation", citing Flynn's continued claims of innocence and lack of prior criminal history. However, prosecutors argued that Flynn is a "dangerous individual with no regard for human life and has refused to accept accountability or show any remorse". They asked for the maximum possible sentence.
