Rwanda's Prime Minister, Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, has stated that the Forces Démocratiques de Libération du Rwanda (FDLR) rebel group continues to be a major security threat to Rwanda and the region. He made these remarks during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow, where he highlighted Rwanda's commitment to regional security and cooperation with Russia. Dr. Nsengiyumva emphasized that addressing the FDLR threat is crucial to achieving lasting peace in the region.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, Dr. Nsengiyumva noted that Rwanda's history, particularly the 1994 genocide, has taught the country the importance of vigilance in protecting its security. He stressed that Rwanda cannot afford to be complacent or underestimate the threat posed by the FDLR, which was involved in the genocide against the Tutsi population. The FDLR continues to receive support from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The FDLR's presence in the region remains a major concern, with Rwanda calling for a comprehensive approach to address the security and political issues driving the conflict. Dr. Nsengiyumva emphasized that resolving these issues is essential to achieving lasting peace and stability in the region. He also highlighted the importance of addressing hate speech and intolerance, particularly against Rwandan-speaking Congolese in eastern DRC.

Dr. Nsengiyumva's comments come amid ongoing security challenges in eastern DRC, where various groups continue to clash. Rwanda has expressed commitment to upholding the Washington agreement and other initiatives led by the African Union (AU) aimed at resolving regional security issues. He stressed that addressing these challenges will enable countries in the region to focus on economic development, cooperation, and investment based on natural resources.

The Prime Minister also emphasized Rwanda's commitment to regional cooperation and peacebuilding. He noted that lasting peace in the region can only be achieved by addressing the root causes of conflicts, including security and political issues. Dr. Nsengiyumva's remarks underscore Rwanda's determination to work with regional partners and international organizations to address the FDLR threat and promote stability in the region.

The FDLR's activities have had significant humanitarian and economic impacts on the region, displacing thousands of people and disrupting economic activities. Dr. Nsengiyumva's call for a concerted effort to neutralize the group reflects Rwanda's commitment to protecting its citizens and promoting regional stability. The international community has been urged to support regional efforts to address the FDLR threat and promote peace and stability in the region.

Rwanda's efforts to address the FDLR threat are part of a broader regional initiative to promote peace and stability.
