The 19th Federal Capital Territory Executive Committee meeting, presided over by Minister Nyesom Wike, has approved the immediate resumption of work on the abandoned Utako General Hospital in Abuja. The Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, announced this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the meeting. According to Dr Fasawe, the project will cover the complete construction, equipping, and staffing of the hospital.
Dr Fasawe also disclosed that the EXCO had approved the immediate award of contracts for the full renovation, rehabilitation, and modern re-equipping of all FCT general hospitals. This includes procurement of new equipment, X-ray machines, diagnostic materials, and theatre equipment. The goal is to make quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare available to FCT citizens. The Minister's directive aims to upgrade healthcare services in the territory.
The Health Secretary emphasized that the upgrade of hospitals and equipment, along with the presence of personnel, will ensure quality healthcare for FCT residents. The Utako General Hospital project, which has long been stalled, will now resume, bringing much-needed healthcare services to the area. This move is expected to improve healthcare outcomes in the territory.
In addition to healthcare, the EXCO approved significant measures to enhance safety across rural and satellite communities in the FCT. The Director of the Security Department, Adamu Gwary, revealed that a fresh six-month contract was approved for security infrastructure at the newly established Wasa informal sector. This includes a dedicated police station serving the wider area.
The EXCO also approved a contract for the comprehensive digital transformation of the FCT High Court system within a two-week period. The General Counsel, FCT, Salman Dako, disclosed that the project will introduce electronic court recording and automated case management systems to 67 courtrooms across various judicial divisions in the FCT.
In the education sector, Education Secretary Danlami Hayyo confirmed FCT EXCO approvals for the procurement of examination materials across primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools. This move aims to ensure hitch-free examination processes in FCT public schools, which have experienced an influx of students migrating from private institutions.
The FCT administration has also made significant investments in infrastructure and power supply in satellite communities. The Coordinator of the Satellite Towns Development Department, Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, announced a N5.3 billion contract awarded for an eight-month construction of a 33 KVA power supply line from Dawakinchi to Tokulo and neighbouring villages in Bwari.
