The Federal Capital Territory Executive Council has approved 20 memoranda aimed at improving infrastructure and public services across the territory. The decisions were taken at the 19th meeting of the FCT Executive Council, presided over by the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike. The meeting was attended by the Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud. The approved memoranda cover critical sectors such as security, revenue generation, education, justice, power, and environmental management.
One of the approved memoranda is the digitalisation of the FCT High Court, which covers about 67 courtrooms across its judicial divisions. The initiative, according to the General Counsel, Mr Salman Dako, will introduce electronic court recording and case-management systems. This will replace manual documentation and physical case files. The implementation of the digital court system is expected to commence immediately, with noticeable improvements expected within two weeks.
In the education sector, the council approved two contracts for the provision of examination materials for pupils and students in primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools across the FCT. The Mandate Secretary for Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo, said the intervention is part of ongoing efforts to improve public schools. The efforts include renovation, rehabilitation, better classroom facilities, and instructional materials.
The Satellite Towns Development Department secured approval for a 5.703-billion-naira contract for the construction of a 33KVA power supply line. The power supply line will be constructed from Dawaki to Tukulo and surrounding villages in Bwari Area Council. This move is expected to improve the power supply situation in the area.
The council also approved measures to strengthen land administration and revenue collection. These measures include the procurement of utility vehicles and integrated ICT infrastructure for the Department of Land Administration. The Director of Land Administration, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, said the ICT upgrade will provide computers, workstations, scanners, network infrastructure, fibre-optic connections, data-centre servers, and other equipment.
In the area of environmental management, the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council secured approval for six memoranda. The memoranda cover maintenance works, particularly in waterways and other environmentally vulnerable areas. The Overseeing Coordinator, Mrs Mary Amina Ahmadu, attributed blocked waterways and flooding in parts of the territory partly to indiscriminate refuse disposal.
On security, the Director of the FCTA Security Services Department, Adamu Gwary, said the council approved the construction of a new Divisional Police Station at the Wasa Informal Sector. The project has a six-month delivery period and is part of the Minister’s directive to strengthen security as economic activities expand in the area. The Administration plans to establish two divisional police stations in each of the six area councils.
