The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved the renovation, rehabilitation, and upgrading of all 14 general hospitals in the territory. This move aims to improve healthcare services for residents of the nation's capital. The approval was made during the 19th meeting of the FCT Executive Council, presided over by FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike. The upgrade will include the provision of new medical equipment, diagnostic facilities, and theatre upgrades.
The Mandate Secretary, Health Secretariat and Environmental Services, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, disclosed that the council approved the immediate commencement of renovation, rehabilitation, and upgrading works across the 14 general hospitals. The intervention will include the procurement of new X-ray machines and other diagnostic equipment, as well as upgrades to hospital theatres. This move is expected to improve access to quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare services for residents of the FCT.
In addition to the upgrade of the general hospitals, Wike has directed the resumption of work on the long-abandoned Utako General Hospital. The intervention will cover the construction, equipping, and staffing of the facility. The overall objective is to improve access to quality healthcare services for residents of the FCT. The hospital had remained abandoned for several years, but the FCT administration is now committed to reviving it.
The FCT administration has continued to meet its financial obligations to health insurance providers and Health Maintenance Organisations through the payment of premiums and capitation. This ensures that residents of the FCT have access to quality healthcare services. The administration's efforts to improve healthcare services are part of its broader initiative to transform public services in the nation's capital.
In the justice sector, the council approved the digitalisation of the FCT High Court, covering about 67 courtrooms across its various judicial divisions. The project will introduce electronic court recording and case-management systems to replace manual recording and physical filing of cases. This move is expected to address challenges associated with handwritten records and manual documentation.
The FCT administration has also secured approval for contracts for the provision of examination materials for pupils and students in primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools across the FCT. The approval is part of the administration's ongoing efforts to transform public schools through renovation, rehabilitation, improved classroom facilities, and the provision of instructional materials.
The council also approved a N5.703 billion contract for the construction of a 33KVA power supply line from Dawaki to Tukulo and surrounding villages in Bwari Area Council. The contract was awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited and is expected to be completed within eight months. Additionally, the council ratified two previously completed and commissioned road projects in the satellite towns, including the Gaba-Tukulo Road and two-span river bridge in Bwari Area Council.
