A Malaysian expert in geopolitical affairs has stated that strategic cooperation between Malaysia and Egypt holds significant potential to bolster global support for the Palestinian cause. This cooperation can also drive a long-standing conflict resolution based on international law. The expert, Professor Dr. Far Kim Beng, is the director of the Institute of International and ASEAN Studies at the International Islamic University Malaysia.
According to Professor Far, the geostrategic locations and diplomatic advantages of both countries, despite their differences and complementarity, can contribute to a more practical and coordinated movement on this issue. Malaysia brings experience in ASEAN, focusing on dialogue, diplomacy, and conflict management, while Egypt has expertise in Arab and African diplomacy and direct knowledge of geopolitical developments related to Palestine.
Professor Far made these remarks in a statement to the Malaysian news agency Bernama, on the occasion of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's first visit to Malaysia, which began on Friday. The expert emphasized that the Malaysian-Egyptian relationship transcends the value of bilateral cooperation, as it can link Southeast Asian diplomacy with Middle Eastern diplomacy.
Regarding support for Palestine, Professor Far suggested that cooperation between the two countries can occur in two stages. The first stage, in the short term, would focus on delivering basic humanitarian aid, including food, medicine, medical care, clean water, and child protection. He added that rebuilding Gaza in the medium and long term requires a more organized approach, addressing the political roots of the conflict to achieve a just and sustainable peace in Palestine.
Professor Far noted that Malaysia has the capabilities, through government, non-governmental organizations, medical institutions, universities, and the private sector, to contribute expertise and resources. Egypt, on the other hand, has the advantage of location and logistical services due to its proximity to Gaza. He also highlighted that Malaysia and Egypt's membership in the BRICS group provides an additional platform for expressing the interests of developing countries in international forums.
Egypt became a full member of BRICS in January 2024, while Malaysia joined as a partner country in January 2025. Professor Far stated that Malaysia and Egypt can promote a more balanced multipolarity, respect for international law, protection of civilians, and ensuring humanitarian aid access and conflict resolution through diplomacy.
The Palestinian issue can demonstrate the ability of Global South countries not only to express rejection but also to offer solutions. President El-Sisi's visit to Malaysia is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and enhance cooperation on regional and international issues, including the Palestinian cause.
