The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) in Tanzania has announced new fuel prices that will take effect from November 4, 2026. According to EWURA, the global oil prices decreased slightly in October 2026 compared to September, but remain high due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, a major source of Tanzania's oil imports. The authority attributed the high prices to increased transportation and insurance costs, as well as oil import costs.
In the new prices announced by EWURA, petrol will be sold at 4,083 shillings per litre in Dar es Salaam, while diesel and kerosene will be sold at 4,128 shillings and 4,117 shillings per litre, respectively. In Tanga region, petrol will be sold at 4,149 shillings per litre, diesel at 4,194 shillings, and kerosene at 4,183 shillings. In Mtwara region, petrol will be sold at 4,186 shillings per litre, diesel at 4,231 shillings, and kerosene at 4,220 shillings.
EWURA has also announced wholesale prices for fuel, with petrol in Dar es Salaam selling at 3,935.23 shillings per litre, diesel at 3,979.98 shillings, and kerosene at 3,969.83 shillings. In Tanga region, wholesale prices are 3,931.19 shillings per litre for petrol and 3,974.06 shillings for diesel. In Mtwara region, petrol will be sold at 3,930.70 shillings per litre and diesel at 3,972.94 shillings.
The new fuel prices vary across different regions in Tanzania, with EWURA providing a breakdown of prices for various areas. The authority has directed that retail fuel prices in different areas must adhere to the rates specified in a table provided in the announcement. Wholesale fuel dealers are required to follow the prices listed in another table.
EWURA has warned that it will take legal action against fuel dealers who fail to comply with the new prices. The authority emphasized that it will closely monitor the implementation of the new prices to ensure fairness and transparency in the fuel market. Tanzania imports a significant portion of its fuel from the Middle East, and global price fluctuations have a direct impact on local fuel costs.
The new fuel prices announced by EWURA reflect the ongoing volatility in the global oil market. The authority's decision aims to balance the interests of fuel consumers and dealers while ensuring a stable supply of fuel in the country. The implementation of the new prices will be closely watched by stakeholders, including consumers, dealers, and industry experts.
The fuel price adjustments may have implications for various sectors of the Tanzanian economy, including transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture. As the country continues to navigate the challenges of the global oil market, EWURA's role in regulating the fuel industry remains crucial in maintaining a stable and transparent market.
