The European Union (EU) recently hosted the third edition of the European Day of Languages in Cairo, bringing together 20 countries, cultural institutes, and partners to celebrate Europe's rich linguistic and cultural heritage. This year's edition saw a significant increase in participation, with 20 countries taking part, compared to 11 in 2024 and 16 in 2025.
The European Day of Languages is an annual event that aims to promote linguistic diversity and cultural exchange between European countries and their Egyptian partners. The event was organized by the European Union, in collaboration with the EU Delegation to Egypt, 16 EU member states, two partner countries, and their national cultural institutes. Participating countries included Belgium, Czechia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.
The event offered a range of activities, including over 50 introductory language lessons, cultural performances, and interactive games. Visitors had the opportunity to explore over 20 cultural stations, take part in word-matching games, and participate in "speak dating" sessions. The programme also included short introductory language classes, known as "Lesson Zero," and European songs. Selected secondary schools and Egyptian students participated in a morning programme before the event opened to the wider public.
The European Day of Languages celebration included music and live performances on the main stage. Representatives of the EU Delegation to Egypt and Goethe-Institut Cairo delivered opening remarks, followed by a group photograph of participating partners and a prize draw that included vouchers for language courses. The event was held with financial support from the EU Delegation to Egypt, headed by Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst.
The European Union considers culture an essential part of its identity and a means of strengthening links among its member states and with neighbouring countries.
