Ethiopian Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa has stated that Egypt should collaborate with Ethiopia on constructing dams for the benefit of both countries. In an interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporate, Minister Itefa emphasized that Egypt's approach to dissolving cooperation among Nile basin countries would harm Ethiopia, but ultimately affect Egypt more. He stressed that Ethiopia would continue building dams to protect its water resources.

Minister Itefa highlighted that Egypt's opposition to Ethiopia's dam construction projects, including the Renaissance Dam, was unfounded. He explained that Ethiopia would not seek permission from anyone to develop and protect its water resources. The minister noted that if Egypt was genuinely concerned about cooperation, it should focus on finding a mutually beneficial solution.

According to Minister Itefa, a Cooperative Framework Agreement was signed to ensure that projects in the Nile basin are implemented through mutual agreement. However, he claimed that Egypt had refused to cooperate, despite Ethiopia's requests. The agreement outlines three key areas of cooperation: joint implementation of projects, ensuring water security and development, and exchanging information.

Minister Itefa argued that Egypt had an obligation to contribute to development projects in Ethiopia, including dam construction. He emphasized that Egypt should reassess its priorities and focus on supporting Ethiopia's development needs, rather than opposing them. With over 130 million people, Ethiopia's strategic interests should be respected, and Egypt should offer assistance.

The minister urged Egypt to be more constructive in its approach and to prioritize cooperation over confrontation. He suggested that Egypt should focus on areas where cooperation could be mutually beneficial, such as the Red Sea. By working together, both countries could achieve their development goals.

Minister Itefa's comments come amid ongoing tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia over the construction of the Renaissance Dam. Egypt has expressed concerns about the dam's impact on its water security, while Ethiopia maintains that the dam is essential for its development. The dispute has highlighted the need for greater cooperation and understanding between the two countries.

The situation remains complex, with both countries holding firm positions. However, Minister Itefa's call for cooperation and mutual benefit may offer a glimmer of hope for a more constructive dialogue. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Egypt and Ethiopia can find a mutually beneficial solution to their differences.
