The newly appointed leader of Ethiopia's Central region, Dr. Yotam Getachew Asrat, has outlined a comprehensive 5-year development plan aimed at addressing the region's key challenges. Speaking at the 7th round of the regional council meeting in Welkite city, Dr. Asrat emphasized the importance of building a government that listens to the people's problems and responds swiftly. He identified peace and security, food sovereignty, economic transformation, human resource development, and infrastructure expansion as top priorities.

Dr. Asrat highlighted that ensuring peace and security will be the primary focus of his administration. He stressed that peace is a prerequisite for development and the well-being of the population. To achieve this, the regional government will strengthen its security structure, identify and address the root causes of conflicts, and engage in dialogue with stakeholders to ensure lasting peace.

The regional leader also emphasized the need to boost the region's agricultural potential to ensure food sovereignty. This will involve improving access to agricultural inputs, expanding irrigation and modern farming practices, and increasing productivity. Dr. Asrat aims to create an environment that enables farmers to produce not only for self-consumption but also for the market.

In addition to agriculture, Dr. Asrat's administration will focus on creating a conducive business environment to stimulate economic growth. This includes promoting manufacturing, tourism, digital economy, and other sectors to create new enterprises and job opportunities. He also emphasized the importance of empowering youth and women to become key decision-makers and drivers of development.

Education and healthcare will also receive high priority under Dr. Asrat's leadership. He aims to improve teacher competence, education quality, and student performance in the education sector. In healthcare, the focus will be on preventive care and enhancing the quality of health services.

The regional government will also prioritize infrastructure development, including roads, electricity, telecommunications, and water supply. Dr. Asrat emphasized the need to ensure equitable access to these services and to expand infrastructure development in a study-based and sustainable manner.

Dr. Asrat called on regional stakeholders, including council members, leaders, opposition parties, civil society organizations, and the diaspora, to work together to ensure the region's development and prosperity. He emphasized that the government's effectiveness will be measured by the tangible impact on citizens' lives and that a government that listens to the people's problems and responds swiftly is crucial to achieving this goal.
