Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) announced on October 28, 2019, that the country has received its first batch of 12 Su-35 fighter jets from Russia. The jets, which are 4th-generation aircraft, are part of a deal aimed at enhancing Ethiopia's air defense capabilities. According to the Prime Minister, the acquisition is crucial for the country's security, given its strategic location and the threats it faces.

The Su-35 fighter jets are considered one of the best in the world, equipped with the latest technology. They have the capability to engage in both air and ground combat, as well as intercept cruise missiles. The jets can track and neutralize targets up to 200 kilometers away. Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that acquiring such advanced capabilities is essential for Ethiopia's survival and security.

The agreement to purchase the Su-35 jets was made with the Russian government a few years ago, with the aim of addressing Ethiopia's security concerns and establishing air superiority. Although the initial delivery was scheduled for 2027, the Russian government agreed to expedite the process, allowing Ethiopia to receive the first batch of jets ahead of schedule.

In addition to the Su-35 jets, Ethiopia also acquired four S-400 air defense systems, which will significantly enhance the country's air defense capabilities. The Prime Minister stressed that having such capabilities is critical for a country like Ethiopia, which faces threats from various sources. He noted that preparedness is key to preventing conflicts and ensuring national security.

Prime Minister Abiy highlighted that the acquisition of the Su-35 jets and S-400 systems is a significant milestone for Ethiopia, making it the only country in the Sahel region and Sub-Saharan Africa to possess such advanced capabilities. He emphasized that the country's air defense capabilities are being strengthened, not only through the acquisition of advanced aircraft but also through the development of its drone capabilities.

The Prime Minister also noted that having sufficient military capabilities deters potential aggressors, while a lack of preparedness can invite conflict. He stressed that the government's priority is to ensure the country's security and stability, and the acquisition of the Su-35 jets is a crucial step in that direction.

The delivery of the Su-35 jets is a significant boost to Ethiopia's military capabilities, and the country is expected to use them to enhance its air defense and protect its sovereignty. The acquisition is also seen as a strategic move to strengthen Ethiopia's position in the region and demonstrate its commitment to defending its interests.
