Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently unveiled a comprehensive project to develop the Addis Ababa riverbank, featuring various initiatives, including a well-maintained road for physical activities similar to one in Kigali, Rwanda. The Kechene-Ambassador-Gihon-Irreecha-Bambis Riverside Development project spans 351 hectares and 10 kilometers, aiming to transform Addis Ababa into a modern, environmentally friendly city that provides opportunities for all citizens.
The project includes multiple initiatives, such as recreational areas, a unique road for physical activities, and a separate path for pedestrians and cyclists. This road is similar to the one in Nyarutarama, Gasabo District, where Ahmed and his wife, Zinash Tayachew, participated in sports activities during the 30th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide in 2024. The project also involves developing wetlands, like those in Rwanda, to conserve the environment and provide citizens with relaxation areas.
According to Ahmed, the project features pedestrian and cycling paths, as well as other transportation infrastructure. It also includes children's playgrounds, gathering areas, sports and entertainment facilities, and parking lots with eight electric vehicle charging stations that can accommodate over 100 cars simultaneously. The project prioritizes environmental conservation, with measures to manage river water, protect soil, and increase green spaces along the riverbank.
The project's objectives include promoting economic development and providing opportunities for citizens. A market has been established for artisans, allowing those living along the riverbank to create, display, and sell their products. A large market connecting farmers and consumers of agricultural products has also been set up. Ahmed emphasized that the goal is to build a city that not only provides a good quality of life but also generates revenue and offers opportunities for all.
The project is part of a broader effort to transform Addis Ababa into a modern city. Ahmed stated that the vision is to create a city that is not only beautiful but also productive and inclusive, providing opportunities for current and future generations. The project is expected to have a positive impact on the city's economy and environment.
The launch of the project has been well-received by citizens, who are eager to see the positive changes it will bring to their city. With its focus on sustainability, recreation, and economic development, the Kechene-Ambassador-Gihon-Irreecha-Bambis Riverside Development project has the potential to become a model for urban development in the region.
