The African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Marathon will be hosted in Eswatini in 2028, as announced by AUSC Region 5 CEO Stanley Mutoya. The marathon will move to Eswatini after South Africa's final edition in 2027. This decision was made during the 2026 race in Pretoria, where over 5,200 runners participated. The marathon is designed to rotate among member countries, promoting unity and sportsmanship.

The Region 5 Marathon has a history of rotating among member countries. Namibia hosted the competition in 2018 and 2019 before it moved to South Africa. The sixth edition, held in Pretoria, recorded an increase in participation compared to the previous year, with over 5,200 runners taking part. This represents a 6% increase in turnout, despite the organisers' target of 6,000 participants.

The 2026 edition of the marathon saw participation from countries within the Region 5 grouping, including Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, and Namibia, alongside hosts South Africa. Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Mozambique are expected to join the participating nations in the next edition. The marathon's theme, 'Africa United,' reflects its regional identity and promotes unity among member countries.

According to Mutoya, the Region 5 Marathon is more than just a race; it is a testament to the unity of member nations. The organisers are satisfied with the participation of athletes from various countries and the quality of the competition. The marathon has also seen an increase in participation from athletes with disabilities, with plans to expand opportunities for them in future editions.

Plans are underway to expand the competition, particularly through increased opportunities for people with disabilities. A 5km race for participants with disabilities is planned for the next edition. The organisers are also considering destination packages aimed at encouraging athletes and visitors to spend more time in the host city and experience the country's hospitality.

Eswatini's participation in the 2026 edition included a five-member delegation led by athletes such as reigning Imbube Marathon champion Ntokozo Nkonyane. Nkonyane finished 10th in the men's half marathon in 1:08:19, competing against over 5,000 runners. His participation followed his second-place finish at the eighth edition of the Imbube Marathon, where he clocked 2:30:37 in the full marathon.

The AUSC Region 5 Marathon has become a significant event in the region, promoting unity, sportsmanship, and athletic excellence. With Eswatini set to host the 2028 edition, the country is expected to provide a unique and memorable experience for athletes and visitors alike. The event's expansion plans and increased focus on inclusivity are expected to make it an even more successful and enjoyable experience for all participants.
