Erick Mathew Mkingule, founder of Atlas Digital Systems, was inspired to start his company after witnessing family members and friends struggle to manage small businesses in Tanzania. They recorded sales in notebooks, failed to track customer debts, and had difficulties keeping tabs on payments made through mobile money and cash. This led to a lack of reliable financial records, making it challenging for businesses to access credit or meet tax compliance requirements.
Mkingule set out to create an integrated technology platform to help small businesses manage sales, payments, digital records, and tax receipts. Development began in late 2025, and Atlas Digital Systems was formally registered in 2026. The company, based in Dar es Salaam, has developed three core products: DukaOS, a business management platform; LYNX Pay, a payment infrastructure solution; and Atlas Digital Vault, a secure digital document storage service.
Atlas Digital Systems serves over 52 paying merchants across Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa, with growth largely driven by word of mouth without a marketing budget. The company is preparing to introduce Atlas Fiscal Receipts, a product designed to help businesses and developers manage tax receipts. By using transaction data, Atlas aims to help informal businesses build financial histories, potentially improving their access to credit.
Mkingule revealed that he has invested a little over TZS 8 million of his own money in building Atlas, along with his Head of Directors. The company has managed to grow without external funding by building everything in-house and taking on custom software projects for clients. Atlas also charges for its products from day one, ensuring that they build solutions that people value.
DukaOS, LYNX Pay, and Atlas Digital Vault work together to provide a comprehensive solution for small businesses. DukaOS handles point-of-sale operations, stock tracking, and customer credit records, while LYNX Pay facilitates payments through various mobile money services. Atlas Digital Vault provides secure digital storage for important documents, such as national IDs and land titles.
Atlas Digital Systems has earned the opportunity to represent Tanzania at Web Summit Lisbon 2026, where it hopes to meet investors, financial institutions, and technology partners as it prepares for its first funding round. The company's growth has been significant, with over 52 paying merchants across four countries, and 30 businesses waiting to onboard once Atlas Fiscal Receipts is launched.
Mkingule's ambition is to bring 50,000 businesses onto its platform within five years. He plans to use SME transaction data to build a proposed Business Health Score, which will help improve access to credit for informal businesses. By providing a reliable and integrated technology solution, Atlas Digital Systems aims to empower small businesses across Africa and contribute to their growth and success.
