Equity Bank Rwanda has launched EMMA, a digital wallet app designed to provide users with a range of financial services. The app allows users to make payments, send and receive money, save towards personal goals, and access credit if eligible. EMMA was introduced at a soft launch event for media and creatives, who had the opportunity to test the app and provide feedback. The app aims to bring banking services closer to Rwandans, promoting financial inclusion and accessibility.

EMMA connects to Rwanda's interoperable payments network, including eKash, MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, and participating banks. This enables users to transact with various service providers and financial institutions seamlessly. Customers can register for the app using an active mobile number and accepted identification, without needing an existing Equity Bank account. They can access the app or, on supported networks, dial 5556# for assistance. Equity Bank branches and agents are also available to provide support.

The EMMA app offers various fee-free transactions, including transfers between EMMA users or to Equity accounts, payments at PWE tills or eKash-connected merchants, deposits through approved agents, and airtime purchases. However, supported transfers to other banks and mobile wallets incur a fee of RWF 20. Managing Director Hannington Namara emphasized that the app's success should be measured by active use and stronger saving habits, rather than just downloads.

At the launch event in Kigali, Namara highlighted Rwanda's progress in promoting financial inclusion, citing FinScope 2024 figures showing that 96% of Rwandan adults are financially included. However, only 22% hold a bank account, and 10% are considered financially healthy. The app aims to bridge this gap by providing accessible and user-friendly financial services.

Diane Uwase, a Kigali-based small business owner, welcomed the launch of EMMA, saying it could simplify everyday business payments. She previously had to wait until she could get to a bank to handle payments, but now she can send and receive money from her phone, making it easier to run her business.

The EMMA app also offers users the opportunity to access credit, subject to approval and disclosed terms. Customer transaction activity may be used to assess eligibility for overdrafts and short-term loans. Equity Bank aims to promote financial inclusion and improve the lives of Rwandans through the app.

The launch of EMMA marks a significant milestone in Equity Bank Rwanda's efforts to expand financial services in the country. With its user-friendly interface and range of features, the app has the potential to make a positive impact on the lives of many Rwandans. Key points include:
