On Friday, Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, announced plans to commence the payment of a new allowance to members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in the state from October. The announcement was made at the NYSC permanent Orientation Camp, Awgu, during the swearing-in ceremony of 2,101 corps members deployed to Enugu State for the 2026 Batch C Stream One service year.
The new corps members comprised 983 males and 1,118 females. During the ceremony, Governor Mbah reiterated his administration’s commitment to the welfare and security of corps members serving in the state. He urged them to build cordial relationships with members of their host communities and familiarise themselves with the culture and language of their various host communities.
Mbah stressed that the corps members should see themselves as participants in a national project rather than people merely completing a compulsory national assignment. However, the governor did not disclose the amount each corps member would receive under the new allowance. The NYSC State Coordinator, Oluwakemi Awolola, commended the Enugu State Government for its support and assistance to the scheme in the state.
Awolola said the NYSC remained grateful to the Mbah administration for its unwavering commitment to the welfare, security and general well being of corps members. She noted that the various interventions of the state government have continued to create a more conducive environment for the successful implementation of the NYSC programmes in Enugu State.
The Enugu State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu, urged the corps members not to discriminate against anyone and to respect the culture and traditions of their host communities. Ekweremadu’s advice was in line with the governor’s earlier remarks, emphasizing the importance of harmonious relationships between corps members and their host communities.
The Enugu State Chief Judge, Justice Raymond Ozoemena, represented by Justice Anthony Onovo, administered the oath of allegiance to the new corps members. The swearing-in ceremony marked the beginning of the 2026 Batch C Stream One service year for the corps members, who will serve in various parts of Enugu State.
The governor’s announcement of a new allowance is expected to boost the morale of corps members serving in Enugu State. The state government’s commitment to the welfare and security of corps members is seen as a positive development, which may encourage more youths to participate in the NYSC programme.
