Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has urged the federal government to declare a national emergency in Nigeria's education sector, citing its crucial role in the nation's development and future prosperity. Speaking at the 2026 Enugu Education Summit, Mbah emphasized that education must be treated as a national emergency to address the root causes of poverty and achieve sustainable development. He argued that no nation can eradicate poverty or achieve sustainable development without addressing the lack of knowledge and capabilities.

The governor's call for a national emergency in education has garnered support from global and national education stakeholders, including the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), and the British Council. These organizations have hailed Mbah for prioritizing education in his administration's development agenda. The summit, themed "Transforming Education for the Future: Leadership, Innovation, Partnership, Financing and Sustainable Reform," brought together stakeholders to discuss ways to improve education in Nigeria.

In a related development, Governor Mbah has approved the appointment of 690 administrators, secretaries, and members to fill existing vacancies across 68 development centers in the 17 local council areas of Enugu State. Each development center received 10 appointees, bringing grassroots participation in governance and decision-making to the forefront. The appointments aim to promote inclusivity, broad-based representation, and deepen government reach at the local level.

This is the third batch of appointments made by Governor Mbah in less than three months. On September 21, he approved the appointment of 118 Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, and Special Assistants. Additionally, on August 19, 2026, he appointed 23 Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants, and on September 4, 31 people were appointed into key state institutions.

According to the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the appointments reflect the administration's commitment to strengthening grassroots participation in governance and decision-making. The governor's efforts aim to ensure that government programs and services are effectively implemented at the local level, promoting sustainable development and improving the lives of citizens.
