The Natal Indian Congress Legacy Foundation (NICLF) was inaugurated at the 1860 Heritage Centre, with Ela Gandhi elected as chairperson of the board. The foundation aims to preserve the legacy of the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) and will operate as a civil society organisation, not registering as a political party or contesting elections. This development follows the 130th Anniversary programme of the NIC held in 2024, which sparked discussions on protecting and advancing its legacy.
Ela Gandhi, a veteran NIC stalwart, was elected unanimously as chairperson of the board. Maggie Govender, a struggle and political veteran, was elected as convenor of the management committee. The election of the leadership follows a lengthy period of consultation with stakeholders. Ravi Pillay, secretary of NICLF, stated that a draft Constitution was presented, discussed, and accepted unanimously with amendments.
The NICLF is anchored on the principles and values of the Freedom Charter and the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. The foundation's main objectives include defending, protecting, and preserving the name, legacy, and intellectual property of the NIC. It will also undertake research, collect and archive documents, artefacts, oral narratives, and testimonies reflecting the history of the NIC.
The foundation will undertake programmes to promote the NIC's legacy and cooperate with similar organisations to popularise progressive history and contribute to nation-building. Secondary objectives include promoting non-racialism, social cohesion, youth and leadership development, and good governance. The foundation will prioritise formal registration, compliance, archival and oral history projects, and public programmes on constitutional literacy.
Under Ela Gandhi's leadership, the foundation will focus on youth engagement and matters of public importance. Members of the board include notable figures such as Yunus Carrim, Don Gumede, and Prof Brij Maharaj. Logie Naidoo was elected as treasurer, while managing committee members include Yeshelen Govender and Dr Lubna Nadvi.
The NICLF will be formally launched next year, with plans for public engagement and education. The foundation's establishment marks a significant step in preserving the history and legacy of the NIC. Ela Gandhi's election as chairperson brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role.
