Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi held a meeting with AngloGold Ashanti CEO Alberto Calderon on Monday, 28 September 2026, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and expand the company's exploration programmes in Egypt. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Egypt Mining Forum 2026 in the New Capital. According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi and Calderon reviewed the company's operational progress and future expansion plans in the Egyptian market.

During the meeting, El-Sisi praised Egypt's strategic partnership with AngloGold Ashanti, the operator of the Sukari Gold Mine. He affirmed the state's support for the company's investments in Egypt and its commitment to creating an environment conducive to expanding its operations. El-Sisi expressed Egypt's interest in expanding its cooperation with AngloGold Ashanti from a partnership focused on operating the Sukari mine to a broader strategic partnership in the Egyptian mining sector.

The expanded partnership, El-Sisi said, would cover exploration, technology and expertise transfer, training the national workforce, developing local supply chains, and attracting further investment. He stressed the state's commitment to providing the necessary facilities to support the company's activities and streamline its operations, as part of Egypt's strategy to expand the mining sector and increase its contribution to the national economy.

AngloGold Ashanti CEO Alberto Calderon commended the Egyptian state's continued support for the company and the efforts of relevant authorities to address challenges facing its operations in Egypt. He reviewed the progress of the company's key investments in Egypt and other countries where it operates, affirming that Egypt is a priority investment destination for AngloGold Ashanti.

Calderon noted that the company plans to make further investments in the coming period at several promising sites in Egypt's mining sector, increasing opportunities to discover and develop new projects similar to the Sukari mine. According to the Egyptian presidency, the meeting was attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi, and other officials.

Earlier on Monday, El-Sisi inaugurated the fifth edition of the Egypt Mining Forum, taking place on 28–29 September under the theme “Unlocking Egypt and the Arabian-Nubian Shield’s Exploration Potential.” The forum brings together industry leaders and experts to discuss investment opportunities and challenges in the mining sector.
