The Ekiti State Government has recruited 5,530 teachers into its public primary and secondary schools over the last four years. This was announced by Governor Biodun Oyebanji during the World Teachers Day 2026 celebration at the Ekitiparapo Pavilion in Ado Ekiti. The recruitment includes 430 teachers into the Teaching Service Commission in 2022, 500 in 2023/2024, and 1,600 in 2025/2026. Additionally, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) recruited 1,500 teachers in the 2022/2023 session and another 1,500 in 2026.
As part of the celebration, the Ekiti State Government distributed ₦70.5 million to outstanding teachers across the state's 16 local government areas. The beneficiaries were recognized for their outstanding performance and commitment to their responsibilities. They came from public primary and secondary schools, private schools, and other administrative cadres in the education sector. This gesture is a testament to the government's appreciation for the hard work and dedication of teachers in the state.
Governor Oyebanji also highlighted the government's efforts to improve infrastructure in public secondary schools. He stated that all 203 public secondary schools now have ICT laboratories, Interactive Boards, and 5KVA inverters. Furthermore, 125 of these schools have internet facilities, while old school buildings were renovated or rehabilitated, and perimeter fencing was provided for 54 public secondary schools.
The governor also mentioned that 48 Public Secondary Schools were provided with CCTV cameras, and 85 more schools will have theirs this month. He emphasized the government's commitment to the welfare of teachers, including regular payment of salaries and disbursement of revolving car and housing loans for eligible secondary school teachers. The governor assured teachers that their welfare packages would continue to be prioritized.
Governor Oyebanji expressed his appreciation for the support of teachers since the inception of his administration. He noted that their commitment and dedication to duty have enhanced and improved teaching and learning outcomes. The governor thanked the State Executives of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), and other stakeholders for their partnership in progress.
The state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Lawrence Adedeji, and his counterpart in the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), represented by Austin Bamidele, lauded Governor Oyebanji for his commitment to teachers' welfare and education sector development. However, they appealed to the governor to fulfill his promises to teachers, including the payment of all outstanding emoluments and welfare packages.
Governor Oyebanji also appealed to the teachers to vote for President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming presidential election, citing the importance of continuity of the Shared Prosperity Agenda in Ekiti State. The celebration of World Teachers Day 2026 in Ekiti State highlights the government's efforts to appreciate and support teachers, who play a central role in the education value chain.
