The Ekiti State Executive Council has approved N6.765 billion for the construction of new hospital buildings at General Hospitals in Ikogosi-Ekiti, Awo-Ekiti, and Ipao-Ekiti. This decision was made at the council's seventh meeting of 2026, held in Ado-Ekiti, to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services across the state.
Each of the three projects is valued at N2.255 billion and is expected to be completed within 10 months. The new hospital facilities will include female and male wards, maternity and delivery suites, a children's ward, mortuary, theatre, laboratory, consulting rooms, staff quarters, gate house, and administrative block.
The contracts for the construction of the hospitals were awarded to Messrs Axial Nigeria Ltd. for the Ikogosi project, Wals and Funs Nigeria Ltd. for Awo, and Red Soil Ltd. for Ipao-Ekiti. The contracts were awarded through the Selective Procurement Method, in accordance with the Ekiti state Public Procurement (Re-enactment) Law No. 4 of 2020.
The Ekiti State government aims to expand and modernize healthcare facilities and strengthen the health system's capacity to meet the needs of residents in the benefiting communities and adjoining areas. The construction of these hospitals is part of the government's efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure in the state.
In addition to the hospital construction projects, the Council also approved N1.681 billion for the upgrading and rehabilitation of 104 high-yielding boreholes into reticulated, solar-powered water facilities across local government areas and Local Council Development Areas. This project is under the World Bank-supported Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) programme.
The SURWASH programme aims to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities in Ekiti State. The upgrading and rehabilitation of the boreholes will provide sustainable and reliable water supply to communities across the state.
