Egyptian Stock Exchange head Omar Radwan stated that capital markets represent the natural destination for African entrepreneurs seeking investors, liquidity, and institutional funding for expansion. He emphasized that the role of the stock market goes beyond its traditional function to support the growth of innovative companies in the continent. Radwan made these remarks during the launch of the Egyptian Stock Exchange's "AT50" index in Cairo.
Radwan noted that the story of African innovation has long been linked to the venture capital sector, with the continent witnessing the emergence of start-ups in fintech, logistics, and digital services. He observed that these companies cannot rely solely on closed funding circles and that capital markets provide an important channel for companies with ambitious visions to access investors, liquidity, and institutional funding.
The Egyptian Stock Exchange head highlighted that fintech is at the heart of the transformation in Africa's financial system, evolving from a sector within the technology industry to a part of the continent's modern financial infrastructure. He explained that fintech companies contribute to creating economic value by promoting financial inclusion, digitizing businesses and trade, and expanding access to funding sources.
Radwan emphasized that initiatives like the "815" list, along with cooperation with regulatory bodies, help strengthen Cairo's position as a bridge for capital between local markets and various parts of the African continent. He stressed that the Egyptian Stock Exchange is committed to supporting the capital market system, regulatory bodies, and market parties that work to direct institutional capital to innovative companies with high growth rates.
According to Radwan, Cairo is working to establish itself as a center where leading African tech companies can access institutional funding and liquidity to implement expansion plans. He underscored the importance of African tech start-ups not relying solely on foreign markets for expansion funding, emphasizing that the regional financial infrastructure can mobilize the necessary capital to keep pace with the growth of the entrepreneurship sector in Africa.
Radwan invited founders of companies, institutional investors, and entrepreneurship ecosystem partners to utilize capital markets as one of the available funding channels for the new generation of high-growth African companies. He expressed confidence that the Egyptian Stock Exchange can play a vital role in supporting the growth of innovative companies in Africa.
The launch of the "AT50" index is part of the Egyptian Stock Exchange's efforts to promote the growth of innovative companies in Africa. The index aims to track the performance of the 50 most innovative companies in Africa, providing investors with a benchmark for the continent's tech sector.
