The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, through its General Organization for Veterinary Services, conducted a comprehensive testing program for Brucellosis and Bovine Tuberculosis in August 2026. A total of 62,849 tests were performed on animals across various governorates. This effort aims to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases and protect the country's livestock and public health. The tests were carried out by the Central Administration for Public Health and Zoonotic Diseases.
According to Dr. Hamad Al-Aqnass, head of the General Organization for Veterinary Services, these efforts were carried out under the directives of Minister of Agriculture, Alaa Farouk, and the supervision of Engineer Mostafa Al-Sayad, Deputy Minister. The goal is to intensify surveillance and early detection of zoonotic diseases, enhancing preventive measures to limit their spread. This initiative supports the health and safety of livestock and maintains public health.
The Brucellosis control efforts involved extensive testing, with 38,857 tests conducted on cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats. Specifically, 21,233 tests were conducted on cattle, 5,639 on buffalo, 9,901 on sheep, and 2,084 on goats. These tests are part of the organization's ongoing surveillance programs, carried out in collaboration with provincial veterinary medicine departments.
In addition to testing, the Brucellosis control efforts included preventive vaccination. A total of 503 animals were vaccinated, with 255 receiving the 19-strain vaccine and 248 receiving the Rev-1 vaccine. These preventive measures are crucial in controlling the disease and limiting its spread.
The fight against Bovine Tuberculosis involved 23,992 tests in August, including 18,852 tests on cattle and 5,140 tests on buffalo. These tests are part of the organization's programs for early detection of the disease and risk reduction. The efforts aim to enhance the efficiency of the zoonotic disease prevention system.
Dr. Al-Aqnass emphasized that early detection and regular testing are key to controlling zoonotic diseases. This enables rapid detection and handling of cases according to approved veterinary procedures. The Brucellosis and Tuberculosis control programs are part of a comprehensive veterinary public health system that aims to reduce the risk of disease transmission between animals and humans.
The comprehensive approach to animal health aligns with the One Health concept, which links human, animal, and environmental health. The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture's efforts focus on protecting animal herds, ensuring the safety of animal-derived products, and promoting public health.
