The Egyptian mining sector has received praise from global industry leaders for its recent reforms, aimed at improving the investment climate and promoting exploration and production. At the Egypt Mining Forum 2026, leaders from top mining companies and institutions highlighted the country's efforts to enhance its mining sector. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi opened the forum, which saw participation from several high-profile attendees. They discussed their vision for the sector's future and commended the government's initiatives.

Alberto Calderon, CEO of AngloGold Ashanti, praised President El-Sisi's vision for updating Egypt's economy and elevating the mining sector. He commended the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources' efforts to translate this vision into practical steps. Calderon noted that the ministry recognized the structural, financial, and legal requirements needed for long-term mining investments. The government addressed these needs, leading to a more transparent and efficient business environment.

AngloGold Ashanti's decision to enter the Egyptian market in November 2024, through the acquisition of Centamin, was based on the country's geological potential and promising prospects for further discoveries. Calderon stated that the company's decision was informed by four key factors: geological potential, human resources, infrastructure, and government support. He highlighted that the Sukari mine, in which AngloGold Ashanti has a stake, is a prime example of Egypt's geological potential and a testament to the country's rich mineral resources.

Doug Horak, CEO of the Australia-Africa Minerals and Energy Group (AAMEG), expressed his appreciation for the growing cooperation between Egypt and Australia in the mining sector. He noted that Egypt is at a critical juncture, seeking to support growth and develop its mining sector. Horak emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnerships in this phase, highlighting the need to convert plans into actionable steps.

Rohit Dawan, CEO of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), stated that Egypt has a clear opportunity to develop a more attractive mining sector. He noted that the sector is undergoing a significant transformation, enhancing its appeal to investors. Dawan emphasized the importance of continued efforts to implement comprehensive reforms, including enhancing geological knowledge, developing infrastructure, and improving market access.

Dawan highlighted that Egypt possesses several key elements required for a thriving mining sector, including promising geological potential, a strong workforce, and advanced infrastructure. He noted that the country's industrial base provides an opportunity to attract new investments in refining, processing, and increasing the value added to mineral resources. This aligns with global trends towards strengthening mineral value chains.

The World Bank has also acknowledged the potential of Egypt's mining sector, stating that it can be a driver of growth and economic diversification. According to the bank, the sector's development can contribute to Egypt's economic goals, and international cooperation can play a crucial role in this process. With the right strategies and investments, Egypt's mining sector can become a significant contributor to the country's economy.
