The Egyptian government has launched a major campaign to crack down on street encroachments and unlicensed businesses in Giza. According to a report received by Minister of Local Development and Environment, Dr. Manal Awad, a total of 190 cases of street encroachments and unlicensed businesses were removed or shut down in the districts of Talaat Harb, Agouza and the city of Hawamdeya. The campaign aimed to improve the aesthetic appeal of the city, ensure public safety and enforce laws and regulations.
The campaign involved a series of field visits by a high-level committee, led by Major General Majdi Al-Abraq, and included officials from the Ministry's Internal Review and Governance Department. During the visits, the committee monitored the implementation of laws and regulations, dealt with citizen complaints and took immediate action against violators. In the Talaat Harb district, 85 cases of street encroachments were removed, and 10 unlicensed businesses were shut down.
In the Agouza district, the campaign resulted in the removal of 95 cases of street encroachments and the shutdown of 14 unlicensed businesses. The campaign also included an awareness-raising component, with officials interacting with citizens and business owners to educate them on the importance of obtaining licenses and complying with regulations. A total of 35 citizens and business owners were contacted during the campaign.
In Hawamdeya, the campaign led to the removal of 70 cases of street encroachments and the shutdown of 8 unlicensed businesses. The committee also monitored the work of the local technology center, reviewed citizen requests and ensured that procedures were expedited. A total of 175 "Form 8" applications were completed, allowing citizens to regularize their businesses.
The Ministry of Local Development and Environment has pledged to continue its efforts to enforce laws and regulations, and to work with citizens and business owners to help them comply with regulations.
