The Egyptian government's spokesperson, Mohamed Adel, has announced that the government plans to increase teacher salaries in two stages, starting in 2027. The increase will range from 5,000 to 6,000 pounds, depending on the teacher's job grade. This move is part of the government's efforts to improve the living standards of teachers and enhance the education sector. The plan was revealed during a phone interview with the "Extra Studio" program on Extra News.
According to Adel, the government has started implementing the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, which were issued after the "Egypt 2026" forum. These directives include approximately 65 tasks that cover various economic, social, and service sectors, with implementation deadlines extending until 2030. The government's plan aims to improve the livelihoods of citizens and enhance the quality of education.
The increase in teacher salaries will be implemented gradually over two fiscal years, reaching the target minimum income for teachers by the end of the 2028-2029 fiscal year. Adel emphasized that the government is working to improve the salaries of teachers and other public sector employees. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is currently preparing a plan to increase the salaries of university faculty members.
In addition to the teacher salary increase, Adel announced that the government aims to raise the minimum wage for public sector employees to 15,000 pounds by the end of the 2029-2030 fiscal year. This move is part of the government's efforts to improve the living standards of public sector employees and reduce poverty. The government is also working to increase economic growth rates and reduce inflation.
The government has also taken steps to implement other presidential directives, including providing 200,000 housing units in collaboration with the Housing Ministry and real estate developers. This initiative aims to provide affordable housing for low-income citizens. Furthermore, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has instructed internet service providers to double the capacity of basic internet packages from 50 to 100 GB without increasing prices, effective November 1, 2026.
Adel also announced that the government has approved a 30% discount on consumption for users of code meters installed before 2024, for a period of six months. This move aims to give citizens time to correct their situations and regularize their meter usage. The government is working to improve the efficiency of public services and enhance the quality of life for citizens.
In preparation for potential regional and international developments, the Central Crisis Management Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, has reviewed possible scenarios and their impact on supply chains and markets. The committee emphasized the importance of maintaining a strategic stockpile of essential goods, energy products, fertilizers, and medicines, as well as rationalizing government spending and enhancing state institutions' preparedness to deal with emerging challenges.
