Egyptian General Majdi Fouad, former Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Defense Forces, has recalled the pivotal role played by the country's air defense forces during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. In an interview with Egyptian TV, Fouad said the air defense forces were instrumental in protecting Egyptian forces and vital targets during the war. He noted that the forces had been rebuilt and a comprehensive air defense system had been established after the 1967 war.
Fouad, who was a major at the time of the 1973 war, said he was part of a missile battalion in the Port Said area. He revealed that the battalion was not aware of the impending war, which began on October 6, 1973. The general said his unit was the first to cross the Suez Canal and was stationed east of the canal since August 1972. He added that the unit's role was to provide air cover for Egyptian aircraft returning from a strike against Israeli targets.
The Egyptian general recounted the moment when his unit downed its first Israeli aircraft, describing it as a turning point in the war. He said the air defense forces had four engagements on the first day of the war, downing four Israeli planes. Fouad noted that the decision to establish the air defense forces as an independent branch was made in February 1968, following the 1967 war and the significant improvement in Israel's air capabilities.
Fouad explained that the air defense system, known as the "Missile Wall," stretched from west of the Suez Canal deep into Egyptian territory, providing protection for vital targets, bases, and airfields. He said the system relied on the integration of radar, command centers, and missile units, allowing for a unified air picture and effective response to enemy targets.
The general highlighted the continuous development of the air defense system, enabling it to distinguish between friendly and enemy aircraft. He noted that during the 1973 war, Egyptian forces used identification devices to recognize friendly aircraft, while the current system provides detailed tracking of aircraft movements.
Fouad emphasized that the experience of the 1973 war demonstrated the importance of a comprehensive air defense system in protecting the country. He said the system prevented the targeting of vital infrastructure and civilian areas, which had occurred during the War of Attrition following the 1967 war.
The general concluded by stressing that defending the nation is not the responsibility of the armed forces alone, but also of all segments of Egyptian society. He praised the role of the air defense forces during the 1973 war, saying their efforts were crucial to the Egyptian victory.
