The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company has addressed concerns over the rapid depletion of prepaid meter balances, specifically "Abu Kart" meters used for commercial activities. According to the company, the issue does not stem from a defect in the meters but rather from differences in billing systems and applicable tariffs compared to residential meters.
Unlike residential meters, commercial meters do not benefit from subsidized tariffs and calculate consumption from the first kilowatt-hour at commercial sector prices. Additionally, monthly customer service fees are deducted based on the consumption bracket. The company highlighted that commercial electricity tariffs for 2026 range from 162 piasters per kilowatt-hour for the first bracket up to 100 kilowatt-hours, to 279 piasters for consumption exceeding 1000 kilowatt-hours.
The company detailed that monthly customer service fees for the commercial sector vary between 10 pounds for the first bracket and 100 pounds for the fifth bracket. Commercial establishments consuming over 250 kilowatt-hours monthly face a 20% increase on electricity used during peak hours, from 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM. This increase only applies to consumption during these specified hours.
The transition of a meter to a higher consumption bracket may result in retrospective deductions for previously consumed quantities, leading to a noticeable and sudden decrease in balance. The company advises commercial activity owners to operate high-consumption devices outside peak hours, turn off unnecessary appliances and lighting after closing, and use energy-efficient LED lamps to reduce consumption and minimize deductions.
The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company manages and regulates the electricity distribution across the country, overseeing both residential and commercial consumption. Their efforts aim to optimize electricity usage and provide clear guidelines to consumers on managing their electricity consumption effectively.
The clarification by the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company aims to inform commercial consumers about the factors influencing their prepaid meter balances. By understanding the applicable tariffs and consumption patterns, businesses can better manage their electricity expenses and reduce the likelihood of rapid balance depletion.
Consumers are encouraged to adopt energy-saving practices to manage their electricity costs effectively. Simple actions, such as adjusting usage patterns and utilizing efficient appliances, can contribute significantly to cost savings and sustainable electricity consumption.
