The Egyptian Chinese University (ECU) recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Egypt and China. This milestone highlights the significant role ECU plays in the development of Egyptian-Chinese relations, particularly in education, culture, and scientific research. As a symbol of this partnership, ECU is the only university in Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East bearing China's name.
Dr. Karima Abdel-Karim, president of ECU's Board of Trustees, emphasized that Egyptian-Chinese relations are a model of international cooperation based on mutual respect, friendship, and shared interests. She noted that the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Egypt and his meeting with President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi reinforced the deep historical bonds between the two nations.
ECU's mission is to serve as a bridge for knowledge transfer between Egypt and China, benefiting from China's advanced expertise in education, technology, innovation, and scientific research. The university aims to prepare Egyptian youth to compete in the local and international labor markets. Since its establishment, ECU has offered various academic programs and has expanded its faculties and specializations.
Professor Dr. Rasha El-Kholi, president of ECU, stated that the university was established to reflect the depth of Egyptian-Chinese relations and benefit from Chinese educational and research expertise. ECU has a specialised Office for Sustainable Development and International Classification, which supports its efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and improve performance indicators.
ECU has made significant progress in international rankings due to collective efforts from faculty members, researchers, students, and the administrative apparatus. The university continues to improve performance indicators in education, scientific research, innovation, internationalisation, and sustainability. ECU has established partnerships with Chinese institutions, including a Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine and a virtual laboratory.
The university currently offers approximately 45 academic programs and plans to introduce new interdisciplinary programs combining multiple specialisations, artificial intelligence, and modern technologies. ECU's diverse system of faculties and specialisations includes engineering, economics, physical therapy, pharmacy, computers, arts, veterinary medicine, media, and law.
ECU is preparing to open the Faculty of Human Medicine and a university hospital, emphasising that academic expansion aims to build an integrated educational system combining academic study, practical training, scientific research, and community service.
