The Sohag governorate in Egypt has intensified its efforts to ensure the safety of the food supply, with the veterinary medicine department conducting a series of inspection campaigns from January to September 2026. These campaigns aimed to monitor meat and its products, oversee the operations of slaughterhouses across the governorate, and take necessary legal actions against violators. This initiative was launched in response to directives from Governor Tarek Rashad to tighten control over markets and outlets selling and trading meat and food products.

According to Dr. Ahmed Hamdi, the general manager of veterinary medicine in Sohag, the campaigns resulted in the inspection of 3750 slaughtered animals within the slaughterhouses to verify their safety and suitability for human consumption. Additionally, 7 violation reports were issued during the inspection and monitoring campaigns in markets and meat sales outlets. A total of 1164 kg of non-compliant meat and products were confiscated.

The authorities also issued 4 disposal reports at the slaughterhouses and disposed of 627.2 kg of meat and products that were unfit for human consumption. This brought the total amount of confiscated and disposed of products to 1791.2 kg. The campaigns reflect the governorate's commitment to maintaining the health and safety of its citizens by ensuring that only safe and suitable products are available in the market.

The governor of Sohag emphasized that inspection and monitoring activities would continue at slaughterhouses, markets, butcher shops, and outlets selling and trading meat and its products. This would be accompanied by taking all necessary legal measures against violators to preserve public health and food safety. The goal is to guarantee that citizens have access to safe and suitable products.

The efforts of the Sohag governorate's veterinary medicine department are crucial in maintaining food safety standards. By conducting regular inspections and taking swift action against those who compromise public health, the authorities demonstrate their commitment to protecting citizens. The confiscation and disposal of over 1.7 tons of contaminated meat and products underscore the significance of these efforts.

The campaigns also highlight the importance of collaboration between different government agencies to achieve food safety. The veterinary medicine department works closely with other authorities to ensure that all aspects of food production and distribution are monitored and regulated. This multi-faceted approach helps to identify and address potential risks to public health.

In conclusion, the Sohag governorate's initiatives to ensure food safety have led to the confiscation and disposal of significant amounts of contaminated meat and products. The authorities' commitment to maintaining high standards of food safety is evident in their continued efforts to monitor and regulate the food supply.
