On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Egyptian authorities intercepted an attempt to smuggle 30 small crocodiles on a train traveling from Aswan to Alexandria. The crocodiles, measuring between 20 and 25 centimeters in length, were discovered inside a large blue container hidden within a luggage bag. The container was in the possession of a heating and cooling technician who was on board the train.

The seized crocodiles were handed over to the Wadi Al-Asiuti protected area in Asyut Governorate, where they will receive the necessary care before being released back into their natural habitat at Lake Nasser in Aswan. Dr. Manal Ewad, Minister of Local Development and Environment, emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to protect wildlife and preserve biodiversity. She also stressed the need to combat illegal practices that threaten wild animals.

Dr. Ewad highlighted the importance of providing suitable care for the crocodiles before releasing them into their natural environment, which will contribute to preserving natural resources and sustaining ecosystems. The Ministry of Local Development and Environment, in collaboration with relevant authorities, is working to ensure the proper handling and care of the seized animals.

According to Eng. Sherif Abdel Rahim, CEO of the Environmental Affairs Agency, the Wadi Al-Asiuti protected area received a notification about the seizure of the 30 small crocodiles at Aswan's railway station. The crocodiles were found inside a large blue container hidden within a luggage bag. A report was filed, and a specialized committee from the Natural Protected Areas sector was formed to follow up on the incident.

The CEO of the Environmental Affairs Agency added that the seized crocodiles were taken into custody and transferred to the Wadi Al-Asiuti protected area, where they will receive care and nutrition. This process followed the issuance of a permit from the relevant authorities regarding their return to their natural habitat at Lake Nasser in Aswan.

The relevant authorities are working to prepare the crocodiles for release into their natural environment, ensuring their health and ability to survive in their suitable environment. This effort is part of the state's endeavors to protect wildlife and combat illegal trade in wild animals.

The incident highlights the ongoing efforts of Egyptian authorities to protect wildlife and prevent the smuggling of endangered species. The seized crocodiles will be released back into their natural habitat, and those involved in the smuggling attempt will face the necessary legal consequences.
