Senior Chief Mlolo of Nsanje District has expressed satisfaction with plans to upgrade Osiyana Health Centre to a community hospital. The upgrade aims to improve healthcare services in the area. Currently, pregnant women often resort to Trinity Mission Hospital, incurring higher costs. The chief's sentiments were echoed during the launch of projects under the Reformed K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in Nsanje District.
Nsanje North legislator Francis Folley, also Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology, revealed that the council prioritized Osiyana Health Centre and allocated K1.7 billion for the project. The funds will be used to construct a maternity wing, radiology unit, theatre room, mortuary, and paediatric ward. These additions will enable the facility to provide a wider range of services to the local community.
The upgrade of Osiyana Health Centre is part of a larger initiative to improve healthcare infrastructure in Nsanje District. According to Nsanje district director of health and sanitation services Gilbert Chapweteka, upgrading the facility is a significant development for the area. The new services will address gaps in healthcare provision, enhancing the overall quality of care for residents.
Nsanje District Council's allocation of funds for various projects under the CDF was highlighted during the launch event. The council's efforts aim to drive development and improve living standards in the district. The projects are expected to have a positive impact on the local population, addressing pressing needs in healthcare, infrastructure, and other sectors.
Nsanje district commissioner Sandram Naluso provided an update on the implementation of CDF projects. He stated that the district expects to receive 20 percent of the K25 billion fund, having already received K1 billion for administration. The commissioner set a target for project completion by March 2027, emphasizing the importance of timely execution.
In addition to the hospital upgrade, legislator Francis Folley inspected Osiyana Community Hospital and commissioned other projects. These included the Monica Bridge and Makhanga Extension Planning Area staff house, constructed under the World Bank-funded Regional Climate Resilience Programme. The inspection and commissioning reflect the ongoing efforts to drive development and improve infrastructure in the district.
The upgrade of Osiyana Health Centre to a community hospital is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services in Nsanje District. With the allocated funds and planned infrastructure developments, the facility will be better equipped to serve the local population.
