Egyptian authorities have launched a crackdown on unlicensed food warehouses and markets in Asyut, resulting in the seizure of 320 bottles of unfit mineral water and 142 kg of spoiled meat products. The campaign, led by Asyut Governor Mohamed Elwan, aimed to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and prevent price manipulation. The governor emphasized the importance of intensifying campaigns to monitor markets, bakeries, and food establishments across the province.
The Asyut Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, under the supervision of Dr. Antar Said, carried out a series of campaigns in various centers and cities of the province. Inspectors checked on bakeries, commercial shops, markets, and warehouses to ensure compliance with food safety regulations. The campaigns uncovered multiple violations, including unlicensed food storage facilities and spoiled food products.
Authorities discovered 142 kg of spoiled meat, poultry, and fish products, as well as 1450 expired food packets and 80 unlabelled yogurt containers. Additionally, 40 kg of unlabelled black honey and 5 tons of subsidized sugar with short weights were seized. An investigation into a cleaning products warehouse that was found to be counterfeiting famous brands is ongoing.
Inspectors also found 9860 liters of diesel and gasoline that had been hoarded by some fuel stations. A fuel station was caught selling fuel at inflated prices, and 2505 liters of diesel were confiscated. Furthermore, authorities issued 6 closure notices to food traders and 14 notices for failing to display prices.
In the bakeries sector, authorities issued 550 fines for various offenses, including underweight bread, poor hygiene, and lack of price displays. Some bakeries were found to be hoarding subsidized flour, and one bakery was caught selling flour meant for subsidized bread.
Authorities also uncovered 350 stolen food cards and 23 health certificate violations. A total of 44 businesses were fined for failing to display prices. Governor Elwan vowed to continue monitoring markets and taking action against those who compromise consumer rights or food safety.
The campaigns resulted in a total of 649 fines being issued to bakeries, markets, and food establishments. Governor Elwan emphasized that the province prioritizes market regulation and will continue to take decisive action against violators to ensure consumer safety and fair prices.
