The Egyptian government is undertaking a comprehensive plan to develop fixed internet networks across the country. According to Mohamed Ibrahim, Deputy Executive and official spokesperson for the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), a significant proportion of existing lines rely on copper cables, which have limited speeds of up to 30 megabits per second. The upgrade aims to improve service quality and meet user demands.

As part of the development plan, over 5.5 million lines have already been converted to fiber-optic networks, enabling speeds of up to 100 and 200 megabits per second. This upgrade has significantly enhanced internet services, allowing users to access high-speed connections. The NTRA's efforts have yielded substantial results, with a notable increase in fiber-optic connections.

The future plan targets the development of an additional 6 million lines, with a projected annual increase of 2 million lines over the next three years. This aims to make fiber-optic networks available to over 90% of fixed internet lines. The upgrade will ensure that a vast majority of users have access to high-speed internet, facilitating better online experiences.

In terms of mobile networks, the number of towers has increased significantly, rising from around 24,000 towers in 2021 to nearly 38,000 towers currently. The NTRA aims to reach 40,000 towers by the end of the year, representing a 60% increase over five years. This expansion has been driven by the surge in internet consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic led to a substantial increase in internet usage, with consumption rates doubling within a month or two. To keep pace with this growth, the NTRA has accelerated its expansion plans. The upgraded infrastructure will enable better internet services, supporting the increasing demand for online connectivity.

The development plan is part of a broader effort to enhance Egypt's digital infrastructure. By investing in fiber-optic networks and mobile towers, the government aims to improve internet services, increase accessibility, and support economic growth. The upgrades will have a positive impact on various sectors, including education, healthcare, and e-commerce.

The successful implementation of the plan will depend on effective coordination between the NTRA, internet service providers, and other stakeholders. The upgraded infrastructure will provide a solid foundation for Egypt's digital future, enabling the country to harness the benefits of the digital economy. With a strong focus on development and expansion, Egypt is poised to take significant strides in enhancing its internet infrastructure.
